Ratings across platforms
Review counts reflect public data at the time of our last review. Tallmadge holds a 4.5 across 133 Google reviews and a 4.7 on Yelp. As a matter of principle the shop does not chase reviews, so its counts run lower than the national chains nearby, but it rates well where customers do leave them. It is a NAPA AutoCare center and a Certified Woman-Owned Business (WBE), and it has served Cortland since 1932. Tap any source to see the listing.
About Tallmadge Tire & Auto Service of Cortland
Tallmadge Tire & Auto Service has kept Cortland drivers safe on the road since 1932. Ninety-four years at the same Groton Avenue location makes it the most established auto and tire shop in the city, and it is still locally and family-owned, now under Tracy Kline — a certified Women's Business Enterprise. Reviewers here talk in decades, not visits: customers who have trusted the shop with their family's cars for ten and twenty years, and who point to honest, no-pressure advice as the reason they keep coming back.
It is a true one-stop shop. As a NAPA AutoCare Center, Tallmadge backs its repairs with NAPA's nationwide 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty, honored at thousands of shops across the country, not just in Cortland. It is a certified New York State inspection station, so the annual inspection every driver needs and any repairs to pass it happen in one visit. Beyond inspections, the team handles brakes, steering and suspension, engine and transmission work, and the full range of maintenance, and as a full-line tire dealer it carries every major brand, including Michelin, Bridgestone, BFGoodrich, Continental, Firestone, General, and Uniroyal.
The shop is woven into Cortland the way a 94-year business tends to be, supporting the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce, the YWCA, Toys for Tots, and local schools. Financing is available, a shuttle can be arranged on request, and an after-hours drop box makes it easy to leave a vehicle. A few things it does not do, and will tell you so: ADAS calibration, collision and body work, and paint.
Why we rank it #1 in Cortland
Among Cortland's tire and auto shops, none match Tallmadge's combination of a 94-year local track record, NAPA AutoCare's nationwide warranty, New York State inspection certification, and certified woman-owned ownership. National chains post bigger review counts on the strength of transaction volume, and we say so plainly — Mavis has more reviews and a higher rating. But we weight the measures that survive a move, a bad quarter, or a change of corporate ownership: Tallmadge is still here, still local, and still accountable to the people it serves. Ninety-four years is the ultimate review.
