Our Methodology: How We Rank Auto Repair Shops
Every shop on BestAutoRepair.us is ranked using public, verifiable data. No shop pays to be listed. No shop pays to rank higher. This page explains exactly what we measure, how we weigh it, and how to check our work.
What We Measure
We rank shops on four criteria. All four are publicly verifiable — you can check every one of them yourself without taking our word for anything.
1. Review Volume
How many customers have publicly reviewed the shop. A 5.0 rating from nine people tells you less than a 4.6 from nine hundred. Volume is evidence that a shop has served enough customers, long enough, to have a track record worth reading. We weight recent reviews more heavily than old ones — a shop that was excellent in 2019 and has since changed hands is not the shop you would be walking into.
2. Rating
The average score across public review platforms. We read the distribution, not just the headline number. A shop sitting at 4.4 with a handful of detailed, specifically-answered complaints often signals better ownership than a flawless 5.0 with no engagement at all — because how a shop responds when something goes wrong is the thing you actually need to know.
3. Warranty
The written guarantee on parts and labor, in months and miles. This is the single most underrated signal in the industry and the one consumers most often forget to ask about. A shop offering 36 months / 36,000 miles is making a costly, enforceable promise about its own work. A shop offering 90 days is telling you something too. We record the actual terms, not the marketing language around them.
4. Certifications
ASE certification, manufacturer training, AAA Approved Auto Repair status, NAPA AutoCare membership, and equivalent credentials. These are verifiable through the issuing bodies, and they indicate a shop that has invested in training rather than simply hiring whoever was available.
How We Rank
No single criterion decides a ranking. A shop with an outstanding warranty and thin review history does not automatically outrank a long-established shop with a solid record and a standard guarantee — and the reverse is equally true.
We build each list by scoring shops across all four criteria, then reviewing the results by hand. Where two shops are genuinely close, we say so in the write-up rather than manufacturing a distinction that the data does not support. Ties are ties.
Every ranked shop gets a plain-language explanation of why it landed where it did, including its weaknesses. A roundup where every business is wonderful is an advertisement, not a review.
What We Don’t Do
- We don’t sell placement. No shop can pay to be listed, to rank higher, or to have a competitor removed. There is no premium tier.
- We don’t list shops we can’t verify. If we cannot confirm a shop’s location, hours, and service offerings through public sources, it does not go on the list.
- We don’t pad our lists. If a market only has three shops that meet our bar, the list has three shops on it. We would rather publish a short honest list than a long dishonest one.
- We don’t hide the criteria. Everything we measure is on this page. If a ranking looks wrong to you, you have everything you need to argue with it.
Who Compiles These Rankings
Real people with names, faces and track records you can verify — which is more than most shop-ranking sites will tell you. This site is written and maintained by a named two-person editorial team, not an anonymous algorithm.

How Often We Update
Every market page is reviewed on a quarterly cycle, and each page carries a visible Updated stamp showing when it was last checked. Shops close, change ownership, let certifications lapse, and revise warranties. A directory that is not maintained becomes misinformation.
We also re-check a page whenever we are told something on it is wrong.
Corrections and Disputes
If you own or work at a shop and something on this site is inaccurate — your warranty terms, your certifications, your hours, your service list — tell us and we will fix it. Corrections do not require you to be a customer of anything.
If you believe a ranking is wrong, tell us that too, and tell us which criterion you think we got wrong. We will re-check it against the same four measures. We will not always agree with you, but we will always look.
Shop owners can also request a review.
